ما عارفة شو إكتب. الموضوع بيحرجني. أنا بنت من جنوب لبنان، جيت على هالدني ووعيتها على بابا اللي ما عندو مسؤولية. بيحب يبقى صغير، أو بالأحرى مراهق. لم يترك امرأة إلا وعاشرها. وحتى الخمر صديقه، دائما يشرب ليل مع نهار.

وماما متحملة كل هذا الشي. كانت تؤمن للبيت كل شيء، يعني هيي كانت الرجال في هذا البيت، وإذا حاولت تحكي معه بخصوص المسؤولية أو إنو يهتم بالبيت، بيكون جوابه إنه يضربها. 

لحد ما هلق وعيينا وبعد ٣٥ سنة من زواجهم، الحمدلله صار في مصاري (مال) معنا، قام أخذهم منا وصار يصرفهم على امرأة عاهرة بلا شرف، تركت ولادها، وإجت لعندنا على الجنوب. هيي من بلد عربي، لفت على بابا وهيي بعدها مزوجة، ولحد هلق ما زالت مزوجة. بس تزوجت بنفس الوقت بابا، يعني علاقة محرّمة، بس لما واجهنا كلنا بابا، "إنو كفى!" وصرخنا وهيك "إنو تعبنا من هيك مواضيع!" وإنو "كبرنا! فكر فينا شوي. ما بدنا تجرصنا (تحرجنا) أمام رجالنا تحتى يحترمونا" وما رد كمان إلا بنفس الجواب فكان الضرب

I don't know what to write. It's embarrassing. I'm a girl from the South, I came to this life and the first thing I remember was my dad's irresponsibility. He likes to stay young, or as a matter of fact, a teenager. He hasn't left a girl he hasn't been with. Even alcohol is his close friend, always drink day and night. 

And mom is withstanding everything. She used to supply everything for the house, she was "the man" or the head of the household, and if she tried talking to him about responsibility or taking care of the house, his answer would be a beating. 

Now that we're older, 35 years after their marriage, finally thank God we have money. I'm your usual average guy. I don't like school and I sure as hell don't like studying. I like imitating people, I like joking, making people laugh is my thing! I guess you can call me the joker of the class. I like having fun all the time. But THEN, one sweet day, a new student comes to class. She's a complete nerd. One of the best students in class. Ok, I fell for her as soon as I laid eyes on her. She was so quiet. She would just sit there, like an angel. You don't hear her voice in class. She got the highest grades all the time. I was the exact opposite. We were too different. So I tried my best to impress her. I started studying more, I gained my composure. I focused on my studies, on my future. I moved from not appreciating those kinds of people to a guy who traveled, studied abroad, got a degree with honors, and got a really good position, and managed to propose to her, the girl who changed my whole life, at a relatively young age.

We fell in love at freshman. But at the beginning of the relationship, we agreed that it isn't going to reach anywhere. We're of different religions. We agreed to break up when we graduate. So over the course of our bachelor, we had a really beautiful relationship, for about four to five years, while we were still at university. And just a bit before graduation, we broke up. Like we agreed. We just broke up. It was horrifying. To be together, to be in love for that long and just end it? Horrifying. It wasn't just a fling. It wasn't casual. It was real, and raw, and pure. And it was exactly the reason that less than a year later, we got back together.

He knocked on the door. I was very nervous to meet the suitor. This potential husband. The idea was chilling. But he got in and we met. And our meetings were very good. We seemed to be getting along very well. He started coming much more frequently. It was awesome. It was great. Everybody loved him. Except me. My heart wasn't with him. I don't love him. And I'm not willing to marry someone I don't love. But people kept trying to convince me, "come on he's great, his financial status is great, he comes from a good family" the whole mantra. And he seemed to love me a lot. So I succumbed to my family's desires and we got engaged. We started looking for a house, we started planning for our future. But I wasn't comfortable. He was showing a side that none of us had seen before. We find out that his entire financial status was a lie, that he had a job that didn't pay well and that he wasn't willing to work harder than that. We found out that he was a liar and a thief, we found out about all the things that he's kept hidden from us all this time. Everything he was promoting when we were getting to know him was a flat out lie. And I'm just looking at him and thinking "who the hell are you?" I felt so betrayed. Eventually, I broke it all off. It felt wrong all along. And I ended it. It was horrible.

أعرف شخصين كانا على علاقة سويا منذ فترة طويلة، لمدة عشر سنوات أو ما شابه. هي تعمل على تحصيل شهادتها، بينما هو قد حصّل شهادته. لكن الفكرة أنها متعلمة كثيرا، وتحب قراءة الكتب. تعرف حاجة عن كل شيء، لا يوجد أي موضوع تسألها عنه ولا تعرف الإجابة عليه. أما هو فهو مليح... يتكلم، لكن لا يحب قراءة الكتب، ومتى تتكلم معه، لا يطول الحوار. في البداية، كانت تقول أنها سوف تعلمه حب القراءة والتعلم، وأهميته. لكن مع الوقت، كلما خرجوا سويا، أظن أنهما وضعا الخطوبة، كان يشعرها بعدم الراحة. كان يتحدث عنها أمام أصدقائهما لظنه أنها أهم منه. كان يكره أن الجميع يعيرها الإنتباه ولا أحدا يعبره. بقي يضغط عليها للتوقف عن الكلام، "تحرجينني"، "توقفي عن الكلام"، حتى أدركت أن العلاقة مستحيلة. أرادت أن تنضج أكثر، أن تنمو، لديه الكثير لتتعلمه في هذه الحياة، وتريد شخصا يقدر طموحاتها. في النهاية أنهت علاقتها به، علاقة دامت ١٢ عاما

I know a couple who have been together for a very long time. For about ten years or something like that. She's working on a degree, he's already attained his. Let me tell you my story. I had a friend in school. At first, we were extremely close. We were best friends. But then we talked about having a relationship, and we both wanted one. It was great. The first few months were wonderful. But then he began to wander off. And I asked him "What's happening?" and at first he used to deny that anything was going on, he used to just brush my questions off. But when it became more obvious, that he'd just disappear for days, and I'd get really worried that something would happen with him. So he sat me down and he said "Okay, I know you love me so I know you'll understand." Then he dropped the bomb, "I like having you. I like having a relationship, but at the same time I like sleeping with others. So, I want you to understand that, and I want you to be open to it. So whenever you want to, we'll go out and everything. But whenever I want my own free time, I'll go to any girl, sleep with her, and be back for you whenever you want." I couldn't handle what he was telling me. I directly broke up with him. 

But the separation was too much to bear. I managed for a month or two, but then I got back together with him. And now, whenever I can't reach him, I know that he's somewhere with a girl. Every time we break up, we always end up back together, we can't live without each other, no matter how much it might hurt. 

He recently proposed. I'm uncertain but I know I will eventually say yes.

I have a friend who has this thing where she can't stay single. She always has to be with someone. It's almost like a disease. She got together with this guy, and he's a complete control freak. And he took over her life. I'm not exaggerating. And the problems were so obvious, and it was just beyond destructive. It used to affect her work, it used to affect her social life, it used to affect her psychologically, everything. Even her teachers would notice. Whenever they want to confront her or talk about her, the first thing that they would say is that she needs to drop her boyfriend if she ever thinks of getting better, getting back on her feet. It got so bad. They just kept clashing and clashing, in public, in front of everybody. It got to a state where they're talking about marriage, but they don't even know everything about each other to begin with. Not to mention they were in a constant state of battle. But yet, they're like addicted to each other. Like, they can't, you know? But at some point she just realizes that it was too destructive and she breaks up with him, and she's better off now. Single for the first time in her life. It's very liberating.

I'm not perfect. I care a lot about appearances. If a girl is pretty then I'd consider going out with her. If she isn't, I don't even think about it. I thought it would be that easy. But I fell for someone. And she wasn't what I had expected. But I didn't care because I loved her. I realized that she was so different, in literally everything. Culturally, religiously, appearances, everything. Without realizing it, I started turning into an asshole with her. I became indifferent the more I knew how different we were. She's different. She's just so different. But I loved her regardless. And, you know, at some points, it was going great, at some points it was perfect. Until we started getting more serious. Just then I started seeing the things that kept me away from her from the beginning. I started seeing her flaws more and more, and started becoming more indifferent. I didn't realize what I was doing at first, until she broke up with me. And just then I realized that I can't live without her. But when I tried to get her back to me, it was too late. She said she gave me lots of chances. She said it was too late.

الكل كان يحسدنا. مجتمعنا ما بيؤمن بالحب، مجتمعنا ما بيحب إلا المال وما بيهتم إلا بالمظاهر والطبقة الإجتماعية. لكن الكل كان حسود تجاه اللي يلاقي الحب. مرتي وأنا كنا محظوظين، كنا من الفئة اللي العالم بتحسدها. كنا سعداء. كنت مفتكر إنها كانت فرحة وبالمقابل كنت أسعد إنسان على وجه الأرض. كل يوم كنت أمر آخدها من شغلها  ونروح ناكل برّا أو نحضر غداء سوا. حبنا ما تغير مع الوقت. كان دايما حب قوي. بحبها. كنا متزوجين ل ٢٣ سنة، لما بلشت تتغير. ما كنت إفهم. جربت كل شي لتصير أحسن وترجع سعيدة، بس ما كان شي يزبط. حسيت نفسي بلا دور. وفي يوم بتقلي "تعبت. بدي فرصة إرتاح" وعرضت عليها تختار المكان اللي بتريدو، وباخذها عليه. كنت مارق بوضع حرج في عملي، وما كنت متأكد إني قادر على مصاريف هيك رحلة. بس بعمل شو مل بدها لتكون سعيدة. أكدتلي إنو بدها وقت تكون لحالها، وإنو حدا لازم يبقى مع الولاد. وذكرتني إنو عندي شغلي ما فيي إتركو. فقبلت تروح وحدها. وبس وصلت، اتصلت بي، وبكل بساطة قالت لي إنو في حدا تاني في حياتها، وإنها أرسلت لي وراق الطلاق، وإنو إذا بحبها بطلقها

Everybody envied us. We were in a culture where love wasn't given much importance, not as much as money and class. But everybody was envious of the people who did find love. They were the lucky ones. My wife and I were in that category. We were very happy. I thought she was very happy, and in turn I was the luckiest man alive. I used to pick her up from her day time job everyday, we'd either have lunch outside or go and make lunch together. Our love didn't dwindle with time. It was steadfast and strong. I love her. We had been married for 23 years, when she started spiraling downwards. I couldn't explain it. I tried everything in my power to make her feel better, all to no avail. I felt so helpless. One day she tells me "I'm just tired. I  need a break.". I asked her to pick whatever place she wants, and we could go there; I was going through a rough patch at work and wasn't sure that I can afford the break, but hell, I would do anything to make her happy again. She assures me that she needs alone time, and that someone needs to stay and take care of the children. And she reminded me about my job. So I agreed to let her go alone. And as soon as she lands, she simply sends me the divorce papers, she says that she's found someone else, and that if I loved her, I would divorce her. 

Just like that. My world ended.

بحبه! والله بحبّه! نسيت الدنيي كلها عشان حبّه. كنت عميا. ما بعمري فكّرت قدّيه نحنا مختلفين. كنت دايماً قول “بيمشي الحال. لازم يمشي الحال.” بس كنت عم بضحك على حالي. كيف بدّو يمشي هالحال؟ تركته. كانت ذكرى أول مرّة التقينا. بوقتها كل شي توضح قدامي. أنا وهوّي مش لبعض. اللي عملتو ما كان سهل، بس كان ضروري وهلّق أنا مرتاحة. علاقتنا كان ممكن تقضي على حياتنا

I love him. I really do. It was this that drove me to forget all about everything else, to just focus on loving him. I was blinded. I couldn't see how different we were. I grew up in a very religious environment. The school was very strict. But I wasn't like that. I didn't have a monolithic way of thinking. My mom and dad got divorced, and my dad took care of me. He was very open-minded. I can do whatever I want and he wouldn't stop me. My boyfriend used to come over and sometimes stay the night and he wouldn't mind. We wouldn't be doing anything. I was young and I wasn't interested yet. We would chat, play board games. Silly things like that. It was wonderful. But three years later, he breaks up with me, out of the blue. "The house isn't strict enough and we can do whatever and no one would care", he said. Whatever that meant. Suddenly my dad trusting me to make my decisions on my own and giving me freedom became the reason for my breakup. The bitter taste of irony. He couldn't have noticed all throughout the three years that I wasn't religious enough? Or did he just want to toy with me, something for his entertainment, until he finished school and went on to university. I was just something to fill his empty time with. I will never forgive him.
